Birmingham Butterfly Awareness Day
Butterfly Gardening and Conservation
On a perfect summer day, I was delighted to join the Birmingham Botanical Gardens to celebrate Butterfly Education and Awareness Day, and to share my newest book in the eco mystery series for middle grades, The Adventures of The Sizzling Six: Monarch Mysteries (book 6).
What a pleasure to see children, as happy and carefree as the butterflies, awed by the butterfly release sponsored by the Birmingham Zoo. To promote the conservation of butterflies, in particular through gardening with native wildflowers the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, the Native Plant Group at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, the McWane Science Center, Fresh Air Family, Ruffner Mountain Nature Center, offered fun and educational activities for all ages. A host of native plants were available for purchase from The Gardens and from Arnold Rutkis of Sims Ecoscape. The Botanical Garden’s event is part of a nation-wide celebration promoted by the Association for Butterflies, a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of butterflies. Special thanks to Taylor Steele and the dedicated staff of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens for hosting this memorable event!
